Sustainable Summer Essentials

Sustainable Summer Essentials

I love summer. There’s something in the air - can you feel it?! Even though many of us don’t get a full three month summer break anymore, this season comes with a sense of relaxation and ease. What are your summer plans? Whether you’re staying home, in need of a daycation, or going on a trip, we’ve got some ideas for you to stay sustainable while you’re at it. Grab your sunscreen, and I’ll meet you at the beach!

Outdoor Furniture

If your patio or backyard needs an upgrade, Polywood and Yardbird are outdoor furniture brands we love. Both use ocean bound plastics to create their furniture, which is extremely durable in all weather conditions. Polywood uses recycled milk jugs and detergent bottles and Yardbird has collected all kinds of plastic waste throughout the Philippines. Their furniture looks beautiful, is so comfy, and is doing good for the planet.

Mood Lighting

These solar lanterns from Food52 are beautiful, affordable, and make any outdoor occasion feel dreamy and elevated. Whether you’re hosting or just wanting to enjoy your outdoor space solo, I promise these will enhance your experience. Pop them up alone, or string them with other lights!

Reef-Safe Sunscreen

I wear sunscreen every single day, and it's important to me that what I put on my body is free of gross chemicals, and won't harm the planet. I use this Tower28 Mineral Sunscreen + Foundation to help my skin look glowy without feeling like I'm wearing makeup. For a quick and easy spray, this Public Goods sunscreen is awesome.

Sustainable Luggage

If you’re going on a trip this summer, consider traveling with Solgaard! Their suitcases have built in closets, so you can separate out your outfits or categorize your clothing prior to travel. They are SO cool. Plus, all of their luggage is made from recycled ocean plastic: each bag saving about 229 plastic water bottles. They have both carry-ons and checked bags in a variety of colors.

Laser Hair Removal

If you’ve never done laser, but have been considering it, there’s no reason not to when there’s TONS of Groupons making the service very affordable. You can do several treatments for around $100 at locations ALL over. Most recently, I went to Skin Code LA in Koreatown. It works best with dark hair, but if you have lighter hair there’s a chance you’ll have some luck with a number of treatments. Plus, it’s better for the environment since you’ll be cutting down plastic waste on razors, shaving cream, and spending less time in the shower!

Day Pass

If you want to feel boujee for a day, Day Pass is the way to go. For as little as $20/head you can get access to a super nice resort or hotel in LA for the day. Maybe you don’t have a pool at home, or maybe you just want to be in a new environment, and relax while getting served mojitos without lifting a finger! For a higher price, you can get a daybed or cabana to share with friends. Many of the hotels have music on the weekends and serve food poolside, such as the W Hotel in Hollywood, that you can access for $30. And, it’s sustainable because, well, who doesn’t need a pool day every once and a while to sustain your mental health!!! Haha!
