13 Quick and Easy Sustainable Home Swaps

With so many more options on the market for greener items and products, I try to be conscious about what I’m bringing into and using in my home. Making the switch can be tough, but once you find products you like and know where to buy them, it will become a routine you can feel proud of. Read through to hear about some of the home safe and planet friendly products that were a game changer for me!

1. Bamboo cotton swabs

Cotton swabs with plastic sticks are SUCH a waste. These alternatives from Eco Roots are made from bamboo and cotton that can easily be composted.

2. Shampoo + Conditioner Bars

Switching to shampoo and conditioner bars instead of bottled products is such a good move to avoid any need for any kind of containment! Plus, they’re awesome for travel, since you don’t need to worry about liquid! Check out the shampoo bar and conditioner bar options from Eco Roots!

3. Bamboo Paper Products

Did you know that you can find bamboo substitutes for most paper products? Who Gives a Crap has bamboo toilet paper and tissues!

4. Dropps

Switch to Dropps for your laundry and dishwashing needs. They have created eco-friendly pods with clean ingredients and are conscious in their packaging too. Try the dishwasher detergent pods, dryer balls, and laundry detergent pods.

5. Reusable Ziplocs

These seriously changed my life!!! I was so conscious of how much plastic I was wasting via ziploc bag / single use plastic in general. What a waste! I bought this set of 12 that come in a variety of sizes from The Sister Collective and I’ve been good to go ever since.

6. Homemade Room Spray

Say bye bye to Febreeze and instead fill a reusable glass bottle with a homemade concoction of water, witch hazel, and essential oils of your choosing. Give a spritz to all of the rooms in your home for a nice refresh!

7. Palm Leaf Plates

Palm Leaf Plates are a great compostable alternative to paper or plastic disposable plates. Check out this article to read why palm leaf is actually even more sustainable than bamboo.

8. Bamboo Utensils

Let’s get rid of single use plastic utensils! The Sister Collective has an AWESOME Portable Bamboo Utensil Set. Carry this around in your car and you’ll be ready to turn down plastic utensils wherever you go. Bed Bath and Beyond also has a variety of bamboo kitchen tools to choose from!

9. Wax Food Wraps

I’m obsessed with these! Replace your plastic wrap and foil with these food storage wraps made from beeswax! You can wash them and use them again. Don’t forget to use up all of your remaining saran wrap and foil instead of tossing it out - no waste!

10. Sponge Cloth

Replace your paper towels with these amazing sponge cloths from Zero Waste. They are great for cleaning both kitchens and bathrooms. Think of how much paper you’ll save if you make this switch! Plus, they can be composted when you’re done with them.

11. Reusable Facial Rounds

12. Natural and Plastic Free Deodorant

I’ve been on the aluminum free deodorant game for a while, but if you haven’t been, it’s time to start playing! I use Native. I love their coconut and vanilla scent. If you’re just starting out, it can take a long time for your body to get acclimated, but don’t get discouraged, your body will adjust…eventually. And, it will be SO worth it. It’s so much better for your body AND Native has just started offering completely plastic free containment for both their deodorant and packaging. Just be sure to click the plastic free option when you search their website!

13. Bamboo Toothbrushes

WooBamboo has both kid and adult bamboo toothbrushes that have been recommended by dentists - electric and regular! This company is awesome! They partner with rePurpose Global, helping fund the cleanup and recycling of plastic. They also carry waste-free toothpaste and floss.
