Investing Wisely... In your Closet
Investing Wisely, In Your Closet by guest writer Natalie Decleve
Does your outfit have the power to shift your confidence for the day? Does it change the way that you enter a room or approach someone? Does what you have on, impact how you feel about your body and yourself over all? If the answer to any of these is “yes”, then your wardrobe is worth some investment, both time and money.
Maybe you are ready to hire a Personal Stylist to get it right (hi, I’m here for you) but if not, here is your guide to making smart shopping choices.
Knowing Where to Splurge
Ask yourself two questions: “How often will I wear this?” and “how much of an impact will it have on my wardrobe?” The first question will help you determine your cost per wear. The second will help you avoid redundancy. If you will be wearing something constantly OR it’s a statement making piece, it’s worth investing in.
Coats - No matter how great your outfit is underneath, it can be ruined by a crummy coat. Don’t let this happen to you!
Bags - Bags get a lot of wear AND an elevated bag does wonders for an outfit. Just make sure to choose one that suits your lifestyle and needs.
Daily Shoes - Shoes can also make or break an outfit, and your feet will thank you for buying good quality.
Daily Jewelry - Especially if you leave your jewelry on while sleeping and showering, don’t waste your money on cheaper versions that you will be constantly replacing.
Jeans - Take the time to find the best version of the style that you are looking for (they don’t need to be expensive). You will wind up buying fewer pairs than if you pick up a decent pair here and there, feel amazing in them and wear them constantly.
Knowing Where to Save
By contrast, if something is not expected to sustain a lot of wear, these are the areas to save.
Anything super delicate or white - If it’s likely to be ruined by a few wears, buy a version that won’t make you sad when it happens.
The trend you aren’t quite sure of - There is a difference between a trendy item that makes your heart sing (because you’ll probably wear the heck out of it) and one that you are tentatively trying. If you aren’t quite sure, experiment with an inexpensive version first.
Occasional jewelry - Costume jewelry can splash up an outfit without breaking the bank, and if you plan to wear it only once in a while–it shouldn’t wear out too quickly.
Evaluating each and every purchase through this lens will help you avoid buyers remorse for a spendy item that you rarely use, or buying the “ok” version of something just because it’s on sale.
