Before + After: Transforming an Extra Bedroom for Guests

Spruce up your extra bedroom so that you can offer a more comfortable space for your guests

Our clients had rarely been using their extra bedroom, and it was not set up for any long term guests. As they were preparing to host a foreign exchange student, they enlisted our help! They wanted to be able to provider her with a place to hang her clothes, more functionality and storage in the bathroom, while still being able to use a part of the closet for winter coats and other household necessities.

We custom build wood shelving to create storage on one side, and replaced the clothes hanging rod with one that fit better in the space (previously the doors would hit the coathangers and cause things to fall - very frustrating). We made furniture and bedding recommendations to update the space and create a fresh, new feel. We decluttered all surfaces, added another night stand, updated the bathroom by adding a towel hook, open shelving, a medicine cabinet for storage, and installed a light fixture which had previously been stored in the garage for several years.

Project Breakdown

  • $500 for furniture and bedding, accessories

  • $375 on lumber and new brackets for closet shelving

  • 1 organizer for 3 hours (mostly planning and styling)

  • 1 handyman for 20+ hours
