10 Ways to Bring Positive Vibes to your Home
After a long day at work, running errands, or out on a shopping trip, coming home to a home I love is what I am most thankful for, and should be your favorite part of the day. Carefully and intentionally choosing what is in your home is incredibly important in making sure it is the safe haven you want to come home to each day, or stay in each day if you’re working from home. What makes a house a home is what you create in it. You decide what is most important to you, as our homes are as unique as we are. The pieces you choose, the people you share your space with, and the state of cleanliness in which your space is kept all weigh heavily on your mental health.
If you want to revamp your space, just moved into a home, or aren’t feeling positive about your space, there are some great ways to evoke more joy. As one of the places you spend the most time, it’s important to put effort into making it into your dream home.
1) Remove Clutter
Seeing clutter when I walk into the house is an automatic trigger. I think about the time that it will take me to clean it and sends me into a spiral of all the other tasks I have to do on top of that. Studies have shown that our cortisol levels goes up the more information we are subjected to in our visual field. Keep the clutter out of sight, and get rid of anything you no longer need. Try tucking these cute storage baskets into shelves to reduce the visual weight of your items. This is will also help with reducing morning stress and anxiety.
2) Invest
The best decision I have made with my home is investing in pieces I actually love that will last me for years to come. In the past, I went with the cheaper option but in turn my entire space felt temporary and I was never able to really make a home or fall in love with my home. Now, I can confidently say I’m absolutely obsessed with every piece I have purchased and I can’t be more thankful that my space feels like me. This process takes a bit longer because you might not find your perfect piece right away, and it’s not always easy to make big purchases back to back, but if you have the time to spare, it is worth it in the long run. Also, make sure your pieces are actually comfortable, not just aesthetically pleasing! You need a couch you can melt into after a long day.
3) Host
Create spaces in your home that are conducive for hosting. Hosting is one of my absolute favorite things in the world. Filling my space with people I love gives me and my space a boost of energy. No matter if your type of hosting is having one friend over for dinner or throwing a whole party, creating a communal, inviting space will make your home feel more whole.
4) Nature
Fill your home with plants and flowers. Not only do they make your space beautiful, but there’s a ton of scientifically proven benefits to having these green friends. Swansons Nursery released a great article by Aimée Damman outlining these benefits. She explains how “houseplants absorb toxic substances” found inside and clean the air we breathe. They also add oxygen and moisture into the air. More oxygen gives us better focus and the humidity is helpful for “respiratory issues, headaches, and allergies.” Read her whole article for more amazing info. If a green thumb doesn’t come naturally to you, try using The Sill, which has a variety of different plants, plant bundles, and subscription packages. The site gives details about the plants and the best care for each. Try the Easy Care Bundle to start or maybe the Plant Parent Bundle.
5) Color
Don’t be afraid to use color! A color pop can make your space feel more full and bring out your own personality and style. But use color intentionally, room color psychology is very real. Each color can evoke a different mood and sensation, and some colors you may want to avoid. My Move has an awesome guide to the effect each room color has and which room each color is suited for, written by Lena Borrelli. Read through their whole guide! I like to use colors found in nature to bring the outside in and make my space feel more grounded.
6) Natural Light
Take advantage of all of the natural light in your home. Let the sun shine in! Especially when we’re cooped up all day working from home, access to sunlight can be an immediate mood booster. If your home doesn’t have all that much natural light, be sure to furnish and decorate with lighter colors so your space doesn’t feel too dark. Additionally, try replacing your bulbs with these LED lights that mimic natural light.
7) Sentimental Decor
Add a personal touch to your home by hanging up photos of people you love or trips you’d like to look back on. Any flare you can add to your home that will elicit a positive memory is key. On the flip side, don’t keep anything lying around that will remind you of any negative experience, even if it was a gift.
8) Scents
Use essential oils or candles throughout your home to fill your space, giving you a sentimental feeling, or to make your space feel more fresh or cozy. Different essential oils actually have specific properties to bring out calming sensations, joy, or even focus. Check out this article by Jamie Weissman on Lonny where she explains the science behind the best scent for each room. She suggests lavender, chamomile, or frankincense to reduce stress in a bedroom. Blood orange is ideal for your entryway. Use lemon, mint, or grapefruit for your kitchen. Cedarwood, black spruce, rosemary, and white pine are great for mental tenacity in your office. Thanks for the ideas, Jamie! For more ideas, read her whole article. P.S., we love Saje Essential Oils.
9) Fix it!
Fix the small problems immediately! Toilet paper roll holder fell off the wall? Screw it back in right away, so you don’t have to see the hook on the floor every time you walk in the room and be reminded of the impending chore. The more small tasks we have added up, the more worry we accumulate. Nip it in the bud!
10) Systems
Have a designated space for everything in your home, so you don’t spend time searching and your time at home can be calm, cool, and collected. Ensure you have systems in place and storage solutions that work for you and the way you operate your life. Contain your items with their same categories and label your bins. Need help with this?
