Simple Tips for Garden Organization
8 Simple Tips for Organizing Your Garden
You may be thinking, “how can you organize a garden”?
Low and behold, there are many ways that you can make your gardening more efficient!
TRICK: Keep Your Tools Close
Mount a metal, lidded mailbox to the side of your raised garden beds. Keeps regular use tools, twine, or twist-ties handy and weatherproof! And if you're like me, you won't lose them as often...
TIP: Store Empty Pots Upside-Down
Keep your pots + planters upside-down when not in use (if kept. outdoors). We’ve had rainwater rapidly collect overnight that both breeds mosquitos and drowns lizards.
TIP: Bright Colors Are Helpful!
Use brightly colored gloves, tools, or buckets! They won't get lost or overlooked at the end of a long day of yard work. This can help save you money in the long-run, too! Gone will be the days of losing a tool in the garden, only to have it rust or disappear for months.
TOOL: Japanese Weeding Hoe
Our favorite tool in the whole wide gardening world is a Japanese weeding hoe. These sharp handheld tools make super quick work of getting weeds out, roots and all. They can clean up edges and tight spots in no time. I have 2 and have never had to replace in over 15 years of landscape + flower gardening.
TIP: Seed Organization
We found this tip on a blog a while back, and have used it ever sense! Organize your seeds in a photo storage container. You can categorize it by types of flowers, types of produce, or even more detailed categories if you have a ton of seeds! For example, if you grow many types of tomatoes, one for roma, one for heirloom, one for beefsteak.
TIP: Create a Dual-Purpose Potting Station
if you have a yard, create a potting station that also has storage. I use a weatherproof storage bench and it holds my bags of potting soil, tools (contained in a plastic tote with a lid), and extra pots. Having a contained area not only helps you keep your items organized and prevents them from getting lost, but it allows you to easily inventory what you have or need for future projects.
I love this storage bench from Pottery Barn which can also double as extra seating
and this Potting Bench from Target.
TRICK: Check FB Marketplace!
Did you know that a great source for gardening supplies or storage is on FB Marketplace or your local Buy Nothing Group? Check to see if you can score an actual potting bench which has shelves for storage and a surface for working without crouching over. You can also get plant starts or trimmings from people so that you don’t have to buy plants at the store!
TIP: Use Your Wall Space
To prevent clutter from building up and because some gardening tools are quite large, use the walls around the outside of your house and garage to hang your tools. I hang all of my long handled tools on the side of the house (but inside a garage would work as well) using something like this. If you are unable to mount directly onto the wall, this is a great freestanding option!
