Top 5 Spring Cleaning Tips

Top 5 Spring Cleaning Tips

There’s nothing better than a freshly cleaned house! That crisp smell from your natural cleaner lingering in the air, all items put away in their intended place, no dirt in sight. With spring just around the corner - officially starting on March 20th - we figured you might be prepping for your spring clean. This is a great time to both tidy up your physical spaces and tidy up the amount of stuff you have. Once you start getting rid of things, and only keeping things you really love and cherish, you will feel lighter and really be able to sink into your space!

  1. Use Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products

Public Goods will always be one of my faves! I get a ton of my cleaning products here. Their products are made from natural ingredients and pass on all of the chemicals you can’t pronounce! Buy a bottle once, and then you’ll just need to purchase refills after that! Blueland is another sustainable company trying to eliminate single use plastic. Try their products for laundry or their compostable sponges. Zero Waste has super cute paper towel replacements that we are loving! Another company with awesome organic ingredients is Dr. Bronner’s. Their all-purpose soap is the best.

2. Make Your Own Cleaning Spray

You can make a super simple All-Purpose Spray with just water, vinegar, and essential oils! But, check out this awesome article from The Pioneer Woman to learn which essential oils have the best antibacterial properties plus how you can adjust your DIY spray just a bit for different areas in your house. Keep it in a glass spray bottle that you can refill!

3. Don’t Forget About Rarely Cleaned Items

Sofa cushions, rugs, curtains, inside your dishwasher, and under the couch or other big furniture pieces are areas that often get neglected, even when doing a deep clean of your space. Be sure to really examine your space and see what nooks and crannies haven’t gotten much love. Check inside and underneath everything! Make a list of the overlooked areas in your home so you can revisit them later!

4. Find a Home for the Items you Declutter

Make sure as little as possible goes into a landfill. You can find a home for almost everything. Clothes that can’t be donated can go to a textile recycling drop off like Suay LA. E-Recycle your old gadgets at one of LA’s S.A.F.E. Centers. Bring toiletries and skin care products that you haven’t kept as part of your routine to your local shelter. Post items on your Buy Nothing Facebook group! Check out our full list of charity partners we love to donate to!

5. Cycle Out your Winter Clothes

As the weather gets warmer in the next couple of months (except it seems to only be getting colder in LA??), it’s time to evaluate your cold weather clothes. First, check in and determine which pieces did you actually wear this season? Is there anything you didn’t even touch? Is there anything that no longer fits your vibe? Is anything too big or too small? Does anything have stains on it? Do you have pieces that are similar to each other? If so, those are great items to declutter! Once you’ve figured out what you want to keep, consider moving your winter clothes to the back of the closet and bringing your short sleeves to the front. Or, if you have another area for storage - pack your heaviest winter clothes that you won’t need access to into a bin and tuck it away into your garage or storage closet.
